Artifact Fragments are a special form of currency found only on Ashran, the new PvP zone. Fragments can be looted from most of the mobs found around Ashran, as well as from the corpses of enemy players who possessed them.

Fragments can be turned in at a number of NPCs in the faction base, in order to activate special features for the faction. This amount can be slowly accumulated through multiple players’ contributions, and the NPC can tell you the number gathered so far.

 • Patrols (A: Valant Brightsworn, H: Kalgan): Summons Stormshield Knight/Warspear Raptor Rider to patrol Ashran. Each Patrol NPC spawns with 2 escort NPCs. Wander around getting into fights with opposite-faction players. There can be several Patrols activate at any time. Costs 600 Fragments.
 • Mage Portals (A: Ecilam, H: Fura): Opens a Mage Portal near the centre of Ashran which players of the controlling faction can use to teleport back to their faction base. The Portal has a guardian NPC, and is one-way only. The Alliance Mage Portal appears just northwest of the centre, while the Horde Mage Portal appears just southwest, in both cases slightly nearer to the enemy base. Active Mage Portals are shown on the map. Costs 400 Fragments.
 • Warlock Gateways (A: Marketa, H: Nisstyr): Opens Warlock Gateways in Ashran, teleporting players of the controlling faction between Amphitheater of Annihilation (North-west) and Molten Quarry (South-east). Each faction has its one pair of gateways, and each gateway has its own guardian NPC, who can be defeated in order to destroy the gateway. Active Warlock Gateways are shown on the map. Costs 400 Fragments.
 • Big Battle NPC (A: Anenga, H: Atomik): Summons a single very large and powerful lv 102 Elite NPC to push across the map, depending on which Towers are currently controlled. Similar to elementals/ancients from Alterac Valley. The Alliance summon the Ancient of War Fangraal, while the Horde summon the Earth Fury Kronus. Costs 1000 Fragments.

Turning in Fragments is the aim of a number of repeatable quests from these NPCs, rewarding bonus Honor and/or reputation for Ashran factions, potentially in very large quantities. You can turn them in 5, 25, 100 or “all” at a time, which suggests the latter options will offer greater rewards.

As a result of long-standing feuds between the inhabitants of the zones in the northwest (Amphitheater of Annihilation) and southeast (Molten Quarry), and in the northeast (Brute’s Rise) and southwest (Ashmaul Burial Grounds) areas, slaying Fragment-yielding mobs in each of these areas will grant a 30-minute stacking buff ( Gor’vosh Vengeance, Ashmaul Vengeance, Destructor Vengeance or Shaper Vengeance) that increases damage done to mobs in the opposite area, as well as increasing the amount of Fragments gained from them. The buffs improve both figures by 20% per stack, and can stack at least 5 times.

However, dying will cause the player to lose half of any Fragments they currently possess (rounded up). This discourages hoarding, and forces players to balance the benefits of the stacking buff with the ever-present risk of being ganked by the enemy faction. Players can loot the lost Fragments from the corpses of slain players, and there is even a special Ashran-only item which allows players to see how many Fragments (and other special items) players are carrying, in order to better select their victims!

Gathering 5 Fragments is the aim of one of the first introductory quests offered to players when first arriving in Ashran.
