[SPOILER]Hi everyone!
Today I decided to take some time to discuss with you the game vision behind Crusader Kings III. We hope you are all thrilled by the announcement trailer that just went live during PDXCON2019. Alright, without further ado, let’s talk vision.
Crusader Kings is a strategy series like no other. You engage in the usual matters of war and conquest and managing your realm and the size of your kingdom. Yet, Crusader Kings is also a game about individual people; the rulers themselves, their families and eccentricities. You are the guiding hand of a medieval dynasty rather than of a nation. You might raise your heir to be a mighty warrior and strategist, only to see them murdered in their sleep by your rivals. You might inherit an empire without a drop of blood spilled, just through cunning marriage agreements. War, marriage and murder are all tools at your disposal as you move from character to character down the centuries.
Crusader Kings II was – and still is – a very popular game. Over the last seven years, Paradox Development Studio has grown enormously and we have learned a lot from our colleagues and our fans. Actually, we have grown to the point where we decided to move into new offices a while back (directly after PDXCON) – and it felt only appropriate to christen that new working space with an ambitious sequel to a game that I love as much as many of you do.
Rest assured that we are not compromising the core ideas of Crusader Kings, but from the moment we started development of Crusader Kings III, we wanted it to look good and play nice.
Seeing Crusader Kings II explode in popularity was very satisfying, especially considering that the approachability and looks of the game was never a primary goal for us. Frankly, the game can be rather intimidating, and it is full of features that we would not do quite the same way today. A few years back we thought it was about time to start again with new energy and fresh ideas for this beloved series. For us the goal was to make Crusader Kings both more usable and clear for experienced players and more approachable for new players – and we believe we have made great strides in these areas.
Crusader Kings has always been a game about characters. The actions of individuals are central to the Crusader Kings vision. In CK3, we will make the connections between the player and the character they control even stronger. We want players to experience unique stories in a historically authentic setting, and that is easier when virtually every feature is designed around characters; stories in which flavorful characters with their own personality quirks are part of stranger than life playthroughs.
Naturally, we want to improve how Crusader Kings looks. CK2 has rather dated graphics by now, and we have spent considerable effort on making CK3 look great – particularly the character portraits, but everything from the map to the interfaces has also gotten a serious facelift.
I should emphasize that we will not be bringing along everything that is currently in Crusader Kings II. The most highly praised or useful features from Crusader Kings II and its expansions will certainly join us in CK3, but obviously not everything could make the cut. This is in no way a return to the seemingly bare bones days of 2012: Crusader Kings III lets us keep what we love, change what we do not and bring new interesting features to the table. To learn more about the specifics, check in on our regular developer diaries on the official forums and our video updates on YouTube.
As usual, the developer diaries will highlight many of the new things coming in Crusader Kings III. I cannot go into a lot of detail here, yet I can tease a few for those of you who have been following us for the past decade. Character stress will be an important factor in how they handle new situations, and religions and heresies are quite dynamic and natural in the new game. We are also giving you more control over how your characters develop with a new perk system. And – likely to be appreciated by new players especially – an in-game tooltip system will help you understand the rules and concepts of the game.
We wouldn’t even be making Crusader Kings III if so many of you hadn’t fallen in love with our grand medieval soap opera. For the past seven years, you have filled our social channels and forums with thrilling stories and funny images. Keep doing that. Let us know what Crusader Kings means to you. It means a lot to us.
Don’t hesitate to follow us on our Discord and other social media channels to keep up with the latest news, or to just tell us how you feel about what you are seeing. And if you want to discuss the Game Vision with our development team and myself, make sure you check out this thread here on our forums.
