GoG Preservation Program

The GOG Preservation Program ensures classic games remain playable on modern systems, even after their developers stopped supporting them. By maintaining these iconic titles, GOG helps you protect and relive the memories that shaped you, DRM-free and with dedicated tech support.

Heroes of Might and Magic III

If you could go back to 1999 and think about the games you played and hold most dear to your heart, what would that list look like? For some of you, it might be Resident Evil 3, Final Fantasy VIII, GTA2, Quake III Arena, or even EverQuest. But for others, one title will surely be on that list – Heroes of Might and Magic III. It’s a gaming phenomenon – a title that is considered one of the best by some people, while not really having a big influence on the whole history of gaming.

25 Years since release
1.000.000 Copies sold between 1999 and 2001
10 Years since GOG revived it

Beginning of Magic

The story of Might & Magic series can’t be told without Jon Van Caneghem – creator of the series and founder of New World Computing. If we go back to 1983, we can find Jon doing two things – studying at UCLA and playing board games and RPGs with friends. But that was not enough for him. He wanted to play more, better, faster. That desire propelled Jon to create the company and his first game – Might and Magic Book One: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum.

During our time in Warsaw filming our series on The Witcher we made sure to check in with the folks at GOG. Located at the same studio as CD Projekt RED, this team of developers, lawyers and salespeople are responsible for a new wave of video game preservation. Through their work to release games on their online marketplace they have uncovered missing games, solved legal puzzles, and even made sure that classic games run on modern computers. In our documentary on GOG we explore the company’s Polish roots, and their mission to bring good old games back from the dead.

Time: Filmed September, 2017. Released July 2018.
Location: Warsaw, Poland

Hello GOG Community and gamers all over the world.

We have some heart-breaking news to share: Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and Warcraft II will be leaving the GOG store on December 13th, 2024.

As many of you know, at GOG, we believe that games should live forever. It’s not just about preserving them—it’s about making sure these timeless classics remain accessible, updated, and playable on modern systems. That’s exactly what the GOG Preservation Program was created for. But, even with our best efforts and dedication to game preservation, sometimes things don’t go as we’d hoped.

Seeing these masterpieces leave our store is tough, but it also serves as another reminder of why our mission at GOG is so important. With that in mind, we’ve decided to update one aspect of the GOG Preservation Program’s policy:

Going forward, even if a game is no longer available for sale on GOG, as part of the GOG Preservation Program, it will continue to be maintained and updated by us, ensuring it remains compatible with modern and future systems.

We’re incredibly proud of our work on both Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and Warcraft II, bringing them back to life after decades of unavailability and introducing several improvements to ensure the best possible experience, as close to the original as possible.

Although we’ll soon no longer be able to offer these games in our store, anyone who purchased them before they were removed will still enjoy the most compatible, high-quality versions, guaranteed by the GOG Preservation Program.

And because GOG is DRM-free, you’ll have lifetime access to your Offline Installers. That means, even though these games are being delisted, you’ll still have them safely stored in your library forever, ready to play whenever you want. This is what these titles—and you as gamers—deserve.

Warcraft I & II Bundle: Warcraft I & II Bundle auf GOG.COM

To all of you who support our mission of preserving video game history—thank you. It’s not just about the games themselves; it’s about the journey we’ve all shared as gamers. We’re honored to continue this journey with you.

With appreciation,
The GOG Team :purple_heart:
